Blogcademy Wishes

The Blogcademy is a two day blogging extravaganza dreamed up and brought to sparkling life by Kat Williams, Shauna Haider, and Gala Darling. So far, they have conquered New York City and London, but now they've got their sights set on the West Coast, specifically Portland and Los Angeles. It's quite an amazing opportunity to attend. Unfortunately, I am a lowly library lady and a ticket isn't quite fitting into my budget at the moment. However, there is a scholarship for each location, and I am all over that Los Angeles spot! All I have to do is convince The Three Amigas that I should be selected, so here goes! Show and tell time! The video and text have bits of information in common, but be sure to watch and read to get the whole picture.

I've been blogging in some way for over ten years now. I started my very first web journal on Diaryland in high school, moved on to DeadJournal, got harassed there by my ex-boyfriend, and deleted everything. Then, the glorious fateful day came when I received one of those magical golden tickets: an invite code for LiveJournal (yes, young-uns, LJ used to be invite-only). Livejournal is where I developed a love for blogging. I moved away from home for college, and LiveJournal was my comfort blanket. I carved out my own little online self. I made quite a few friends, a few with whom I've built lasting real-life friendships. While I was online journaling, I sort of figured website building out on my own, starting at Envy.nu, then Geocities, and later getting a site hosted on a domain. In 2002, I was given my own domain for Christmas, and it was my baby. I did everything by trial and error: graphics, html, content, and all that jazz. It's funny looking back at what I did then, seeing my interests at the time. Does anyone remember fan listings? I built about twenty of them. I was cranking websites out at a ridiculous rate (if you're curious, I put together a little look at some past sites here, but don't judge, some of them are from 2002). I poured so much time and creativity into my elaborate web projects. So that's how my internet obsession began and grew.

When I got into LiveJournal, it was a huge, lively community. The golden age! I even remember reading Gala and Shauna's journals. Once activity on Livejournal started dying down and people began creating more professional "blogs," I tried my hand at Blogger. I updated there infrequently, as I was still clinging to my LiveJournal, finishing up college, and planning a wedding. Going from LiveJournal, where one post would get a ton of feedback and interaction, to Blogger, where I was lucky if I received a single comment, was something to get used to. Comments and followers should never be the reason we blog, but we all like to know that what we're doing is appreciated, otherwise we'd be writing in private paper journals, right?

Eventually I transitioned over to exclusively blogging here, and I'm very proud of what I've built. I absolutely love blogging! I'm always excited about my content; I can't wait to share it with my readers. Through the blogging community, I've been lucky enough to meet so many awesome people face to face, people that I never would've met otherwise. This has forced me to be less shy at times, which is a step in the right direction because on an average day my shyness knows no bounds. When my sweet kitty, Lily, almost died and racked up a huge hospital bill, I was beyond touched by the staggering amount of support I received from online friends and bloggers I didn't even know! I'm so excited about connecting with people online, both new readers and those I've been corresponding with for the past few years. However, I've had this particular blog for almost four years now, and the growth here has become stagnant. I'm at a loss about how to expand and gain readership. Though I am so grateful for the amazing readers I have now, I feel like my readership is quite low for having been around for a while, so sometimes I feel discouraged, and I wonder what I'm doing wrong. For one thing, I'm pretty terrible at self-promotion. I'm always the person who blushes and says "Aw, no way!" to compliments. I'm the dummy whose first reaction to "What do I owe you for this art project, design help, etc?" is "Oh, don't worry about it!" I've recently started receiving inquiries about sponsorships, giveaways, and collaborations. On one hand, I'm so flattered and psyched, but mostly I feel utterly lost. I honestly don't even know how to tell if they're real offers because again, I'm thinking "Me? You think my blog is good enough?" I'm also a huge second-guesser. It's been a few years and I'm still questioning my blog name. When I first started this blog, it was called Miss Dee Ahoy, but another blogger sort of, erm... hijacked the "Miss" and "Ahoy" part of that name, so I changed mine to Ghosts Waltz (after my LiveJournal, old habits!). But I think it might be confusing, because I've seen it called Ghost Waltz (or still Miss Dee Ahoy, years after switching), and it doesn't really roll trippingly off the tongue. Should I change it this late in the game? Does it matter? I also want to be more creative in the way I blog. I want to write more, but I also want to get more into video, and I definitely want to bring my art back to this blog in a big way, as that's what this space was created for in the first place.

I would love to attend The Blogcademy because I really need some direction. I need that fire under my butt to keep making my blog bigger and most importantly, better. Above all, I need some major help with being able to talk myself up, because that is one skill I am really lacking. These are all things that would be so beneficial to my blog, but also to me as a person! I need the super blogmistresses to put on their glitter capes and swoop down to save me!

As an added bonus, one thing I've always loved to do on this blog is to make dream outfits for certain occasions. I think The Blogcademy is the perfect reason for outfit-dreaming, so I created a look for each day of the event, in class colors of course. You can click the images to see the sources. For Day One, I'm dressing to impress! Classy with a dash of kitty. Can't forget the animal ears, as they seem to be part of the uniform.

The outfit for Day Two is more of a party look. Sparkles, stars, and a place to stash all those business cards.

So there you have it, Blogcademy Babes! If you're looking for your next lucky scholarship winner, here I am, throwing a bit of glitter your way!

Wish with me, friends! It also couldn't hurt to let Kat, Shauna, and Gala know on Twitter or Facebook if you think I'm the right lady for this honor!

Huge thanks to my fantastic husband Jose for helping with the video and for glitter cleanup... in all fairness, I first tried to clean it up myself but he said I was doing it wrong and took over. Not so many thanks to Lily for sitting in my chair every time I got up to hit record, or meowing in the background while I was in the middle of a sentence! But at least he provided the cute factor.

  2. Fingers crossed!

I am having the exact same thoughts about readership and blog life recently (in fact I have a drafted blog that I am debating posting or trashing, might be a bit whiney?). How do you take your blog to 'the next level' and do you want to commit to that? (Seems like a lot of work)

Hopefully you get the scholarship and learn the tips and bits and tweaks!

    1. It's all really difficult to figure out! Especially when you're putting stuff out there that you're really excited to share and then it's... crickets. It does seem like a lot of work for sure, and there have been soooo many times where I kind of start thinking about giving up altogether, but when I think of all of the great experiences I've had related to blogging, it totally seems worth it to me.

      Thank you, Astred!

aahh livejournal, our old stomping grounds :p I will never forget how I got my code: I got it from some girl through a No Doubt fan site (remember when we all had one of those?) and i got so mad because she wouldn't friend me! oh dear the early days of social networking. yikes. I wish I remembered my password so I can go and reminisce. hahaha!

    1. Yes! You're one of those amazing people I got to meet through Livejournal!
Haha, that is so awesome, I got mine from a No Doubt fan but it was someone I was friends with on Deadjournal. Oh goodness, I had so many No Doubt themed websites, though I never took on an all-encompassing site... mine were for random things like Gwen's fashion. Which at the time was random since she wasn't a fashion designer at that point, but now I guess it'd make more sense.

    1. Thank you Christine! I was trying to remember my info to log into my Diaryland account a while back and it took forever but I finally got it to work, and oh my gosh, what a weird experience reading things I wrote in 2001. I still have all 3 of my Livejournal accounts and sometimes I look back on them... soooo strange.

  11. It will be insane if you don't get picked! You deserve it so much and I love your video! Also thank you so much for including my sweet and lovely pin in your outfit!! That made me smile! :D

    Good luck!!! xo

ps. I'm super shy too but unfortunately for me, blogging hasn't helped much in that department. I still turn into a blushing awkward quiet mess whenever I have to talk to other humans. It's terrible!

    1. Thank you sooo much, Kate, that is an enormous comment coming from you, I admire you and your blog very much! And I'm so glad you commented about the pin because it suddenly made me realize I never finished publishing those Polyvore sets so they were linking to nothing, oops! All fixed. I was too busy freaking out about the video being right that I forget to do I final check on my links.

I am definitely still painfully shy, but blogging has forced me to do things I wouldn't normally do, has gotten me to meet a lot of people in person in situations that might not have happened otherwise, and though I still feel kind of awkward, I feel like I'm getting better at just going for it and getting myself out there. It's certainly a work in progress.

  13. Danielle, I loved this post so so much! To say I'm crossing my fingers for you would be an understatement. This video was so so incredible and just plain beautiful (and so are you! You look even lovelier in movement) and I thought showing Jose sweeping up the glitter was SUCH a hilarious and original touch!

Again, wonderful post and I really really hope you get the spot!

I loved the video through and through, especially your paper dolls. If they weren't won over by that point, I'm sure the dolls of their likeness had them sold.
    Congrats and have fun!
